How Does Rack and Pinion Steering Work?
Rack and pinion is the most common and preferred steering system due to its simplicity and directness. It uses a gear set to convert the circular motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion needed to turn the wheels. The system also provides gear reduction, making it easier to turn the wheels.
The rack and pinion gears are enclosed in a metal tube, with each end of the rack extending from the tube and attached to an axial rod. The steering wheel turns the steering column, which is connected by a universal joint that transfers motion to another shaft below. This flexible design allows for adjustments in the placement of the steering wheel.
The rack and pinion system has two primary functions:
- Converting the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion needed to turn the vehicle’s wheels.

How Does Rack and Pinion Steering Work with Power Steering?
When a rack and pinion system is paired with power steering, the design undergoes slight modifications. A cylinder with a piston in the middle is mounted on the rack, with fluid on both sides of the piston. When pressure is applied to one side of the piston, it forces the piston to move, rotating the steering rack and assisting with steering.
How is the Rack and Pinion System Attached to the Wheels?
At both ends of the rack, a track rod (or tie rod) is located. Each track rod is connected to a steering arm, which is attached to the wheel hub, where the wheel is mounted. As the rack moves, these connections ensure that the wheels turn together.
The track rod plays a crucial role in this system. It is connected to the steering arm by a ball and socket joint, allowing it to move independently. This is important because, when turning a corner, the inner wheel is more sharply angled than the outer wheel, which needs to travel a greater distance.
If the track rods didn’t allow for this variation in angles, the vehicle would experience poor cornering, causing it to "crab" or move unevenly around turns.
